There are certain attributes that will benefit anyone wishing to learn to gain their full UK driving licence.

You might say that these attributes contribute to the the “ideal” student.

Enthusiastic.

An enthusiastic approach will help you to learn the task in hand. Like any new skill, you’ll always learn it quicker if you find it interesting.

Persistent.

This is arguably the, “ideal” student’s most important trait. They will see any minor setback as an opportunity for further learning and self development.

Self aware

It will help anyone looking to learn to drive if they are aware of their own strengths or weaknesses . Are they aware of any personal risk increasing traits? For example, are they the type of person that gets overconfident following a success ?

Or, are they  quick to criticise their own performance?

The, “ideal” student will take an impartial view of their own performance wherever possible.

Responsible.

It’s important that someone learning to drive takes responsibility for their own learning. For example, if a mistake is made, will they look to pass the, “buck” on to another driver? If yes, this could harm their own self development by denying themselves of a learning opportunity.

A more responsible and productive approach would be to look at how the student could have handled the situation differently themselves. This increases the student’s chances improving performance in similar situations going forwards.

Realistic.

Before being able to drive at an unconsciously competent Standard, the new driver will need to go through the consciously competent phase. This requires thought and  effort. Practice and repetition may also be required before the skills, “sink in.” The, “ideal” student will understand this.

The stated attributes of a great new driver will help you towards your goal of attaining your driving license. Everyone can learn to drive by using the points above. A great natural ability to learn helps, but a combination of all the points above are essential.
